One of the most popular medications used for Lupus patients is prednisone or also known as corticosteroids. Corticosteroids have profound integrity in declining and easing inflammation to the bodies of lupus patients. It has been an inside joke that corticosteroids are the miracle medicines as it not only eases inflammation but it relieves pain too.
However, though corticosteroids are considered a miracle medicine it has a long list of negative side effects. Such as moon face, hair loss, and the most controversial and most talked is the weight gain. It’s like when you take this medication it feels like you’re always hungry and always crave something to eat.
Dietary consideration for Corticosteroids Usage
Using corticosteroids for a long time can lower your bones' calcium level. Some of the patients may develop osteoporosis resulting in your body having weak bones and easy to break. Otherwise, people using corticosteroids can elevate your blood pressure, your blood sugar level, cholesterol, and lipids in your blood. Lastly, in some cases, taking steroids can result in fluid retention or having swollenness (edema).
People taking corticosteroids must eat foods that are low in sodium as it helps in fluid retention, low cholesterol level, and a moderate amount of sugar. Someone taking corticosteroids should eat food rich in calcium and vitamin D.
